Mulank numerology, explained

Mulank numerology reduces your birth date to a set of single-digit numbers — 1 through 9 — each mapped to a Major Arcana tarot archetype. Unlike sun-sign astrology, it doesn't need your birth time or location, just the date. This guide walks through exactly how each number is calculated, with worked examples, so you can check the math yourself or just understand what AstroFree's free Mulank calculator is doing behind the scenes.

The reduction rule

Every calculation below comes down to the same operation: add up the digits of a number, and if the result is more than one digit, add those digits together again — repeat until you're left with a single digit from 1 to 9. For example, 28 becomes 2 + 8 = 10, and 10 becomes 1 + 0 = 1. That final digit is what gets mapped to a tarot archetype.

Mulank (root number)

Your Mulank is the reduction of the day you were born — nothing else. It's meant to capture your core operating mode: how you instinctively think and react, independent of any particular year.

Worked example: born on the 22nd? 2 + 2 = 4. Mulank = 4 → The Emperor.

Personal Year

Your Personal Year adds your birth day and birth month to whichever calendar year you're asking about, then reduces the total. It describes the overarching theme running through that specific year for you — not a fixed trait, but a cycle that changes every twelve months.

Worked example: born July 22nd, asking about 2026? 22 + 7 + 2026 = 2055 → 2+0+5+5 = 12 → 1+2 = 3. Personal Year = 3 → The Empress.

Personal Month

Your Personal Month narrows that yearly theme down to a specific 30-day window. Add the calendar month's number (January = 1 … December = 12) to your already-calculated Personal Year number, then reduce.

Worked example: Personal Year 3, asking about August (month 8)? 3 + 8 = 11 → 1+1 = 2. Personal Month = 2 → The High Priestess.

What each number means

Whether it's your Mulank, Personal Year, or Personal Month, the number itself always maps to the same archetype and general theme — only the layer it's describing changes.

1The Magician

initiation, leadership, independence

2The High Priestess

intuition, patience, partnership

3The Empress

expression, creativity, growth

4The Emperor

structure, discipline, foundations

5The Hierophant

change, freedom, discovery

6The Lovers

relationships, responsibility, harmony

7The Chariot

reflection, study, inner work

8Strength / Justice

consequence, power, material reward

9The Hermit

completion, release, closing a cycle

The pacing system

For a Personal Month specifically, each number also carries a pacing signal — a practical cue for what kind of energy the month favors:

  • Active (1, 3, 5, 8): good timing for action, starting projects, networking, and bold moves.
  • Reflective (2, 4, 7, 9): good timing for planning, organizing, auditing, and wrapping up loose ends.
  • Harmony (6): good timing for home, relationships, and commitments.

(Numbers not listed for a category above fall into whichever bucket their number is grouped under — 1 Active, 2 Reflective, 3 Active, 4 Reflective, 5 Active, 6 Harmony, 7 Reflective, 8 Active, 9 Reflective.)
